Obituary for Linda Rae Sedlmajer (Balfany)
Linda Rae Balfany Sedlmajer passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2017, at the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City, SD.
She was born May 31, 1949, to the late Edward Ferdinand Balfany and Julia Irene (Fallis) Balfany and lived most of her life on the Rosebud Reservation. She was the baby of the family and grew up surrounded by her older brothers and sisters: Leon “Fred” Balfany, Judy (Balfany) Till, Mary (Balfany) Brandis, Edward Balfany, Betty Planka, Cliff Brave, and Charles Brave.
Linda graduated from Todd County High School in 1967 and received a BA from Sinte Gleska University (SGU).
Linda began her career as a bookkeeper and business manager at the Rosebud Hospital and Dakota Plains Legal Services. She also started a siding business that she owned and operated for many years. However, upon her graduation from SGU, she achieved her life-long goal and became a teacher who was passionate about making a difference in the lives of the students she so lovingly served. She taught at Shannon County School District, Todd County School District, and St. Francis Indian School where her students remember her as a kind, fair and caring teacher and friend.
Upon retirement from teaching, Linda especially enjoyed riding her motorcycle and being a part of the Sicangu Drifters Motorcycle Club. Always a “people person”, she loved spending time with her friends, riding in poker runs, touring the Black Hills and Badlands or simply riding her bike close to home.
Linda is survived by her son, Robert Sedlmajer and grandchildren Bobbie Jo (Sedlmajer) Koch and her husband Kyle Koch, J’Shon Sedlmajer, and Aebrie Waugh; her nephew, who she often called her son, Dale Fallis, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends from all walks of life. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Leon Balfany and Cliff and Charles Brave.
A viewing will be held Wednesday, March 8 at Behrens Wilson Funeral Home in Rapid City, SD. A wake will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 9 at the Sinte Gleska Multi-Purpose Building and the funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 10 at Sinte Gleska Multi-Purpose Building. Holmes Funeral Home assisted with local arrangements.
