Cecil White Hat, “Oyate Wayankapi” (People Notice Him) began his journey home on Oct. 21, 2018.
Dr. White Hat was a well-known and much loved member of the American Indian community and passed on unexpectedly from natural causes.
Dr. White Hat is from the Sicangu Lakota Nation in South Dakota. His life’s work was helping Native peoples heal from addiction and he had over 31 years in the addiction field, both in treatment settings and teaching in higher education about American Indian issues and American Indian addiction. He earned his bachelor's degree in alcohol, drugs and addictive behaviors from Metropolitan State University, Denver, a master's degree in education from Sinte Gleska University, Mission, S.D., and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. He worked as a program consultant for the American Indian Program within the Behavioral Health Division at the Minnesota Department of Human Services since 2008.
Dr. White Hat was a past chairman of the Minnesota American Indian Advisory Council. He was on the faculty at Bemidji State University, California State University, Fullerton, and Iowa State University. He was also a professor in the Department of Aboriginal Education at Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada. He received numerous awards over the years including lifetime achievement awards for his work in alcohol and drug treatment and his advocacy on behalf of Native peoples. He also served in the military during the Vietnam Era.
Cecil was a visible and respected leader with a warm smile and ready sense of humor, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Rosemary White Shield-White Hat, his daughter Lynette Joy White Hat, son Casey White Hat, daughter Coya White Hat-Artichoker; son Patrick Gonzales; grandson Daniel Morrison, and numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives.
At the Veteran’s Building in Rosebud, SD a wake service was held Sunday followed by traditional funeral ceremony 10:30am Monday, October 29, 2018. Burial followed at St. Charles Catholic Cemetery in St. Francis, SD. Donations may be sent in care of the family to Holmes Funeral Home, 321 N Wood St., Valentine, NE 69201.
